Literature Text

Once upon a time, there was a kitsune who lived on the Sun.  He had been banished there long ago for crimes against the gods.

As centuries passed, the kitsune grew bored of staring into space all the time.  He found himself longing to revisit the Earth, which had surely evolved massively during his exile.

One day (or whatever one can substitute for "day" when one lives on the Sun), he decided it was time.  He chose a sunbeam he liked, clung to it, and rode it down to Earth.

...At least, that was the plan.

It goes without saying to anyone who knows anything about astronomy that the Sun is incredibly large compared to the Earth; as such, very little of its light ever actually gets there.  In addition to being such a small target, the Earth is also moving, and even light doesn't make the trip instantaneously.

The kitsune had an incredibly small chance of successfully making his trip to Earth, and lacked the astronomical knowledge required to make the appropriate calculations and better the accuracy of his shot.

As such, it should have been no surprise that he and his sunbeam missed the Earth completely and sailed off into space, never to be heard from again.
I've had this idea brewing for a long time.

On a vaguely related note, Neil deGrasse Tyson is a great guy; he's a famous astronomer with just the right mix of wit and scientific knowledge to be interesting. I follow him on Twitter (@neiltyson).

That was a funny ending. I liked it.
