Chapter 4: The First Day

(Tails's P.O.V.)

A sudden *BEEP BEEP* got my attention.  It must have gotten Professor Pickle's, too, because he almost spat out his latest bite of cucumber sandwich.

"Miles, get over here!  Your GPS receiver has found something!"

I snatched the tracker off the Professor's desk where I'd left it.  According to it, Sonic had suddenly turned up... in Chun-nan?

"But Sonic was in Shamar when he disappeared," I wondered out loud.  "How'd he get all the way over to Chun-nan all by himself?"

Neither Professor Pickle nor I had any idea what the answer to that question was, but I was going to find out.  Snatching the GPS receiver again, I lifted myself off the ground Tails-style and exited through the Professor's open skylight.

I'd gotten permission from Spagonia University to park the Tornado on their roof; Pickle's assistant had just finished vacuuming out some sand that had gotten into the engine.  He gave me the thumbs-up as I got in and started it up.

(Snake's P.O.V.)

We weren't in the Lounge anymore, that's for sure.

Nick and I assessed our surroundings.  I'd never seen this place before in my life.  Towering rock formations spread above, and crystal-clear bodies of clean water flowed down below.  The sky was completely clear and free of pollution.  The only thing that looked even remotely man-made was the walkway we were standing on; it was a gray-and-brown thing with red edges, and it looked like it had been made decades ago.

My first hypothesis was that this was whatever dimension Nick had come from.  After all, that Stone thingy took him to my realm when the sun set, so it probably took me to his when it rose again.  So I nudged Nick and asked him.

"Hey, Nick, do you know this place?"

"Yes, I do... this is Chun-nan.  Dragon Road.  I was here last Friday."

The fresh air was fresher than anything I'd experienced in my life.  It almost made me gag because I was used to the polluted air of my own realm.  Still, I got used to it after a moment.

I scanned the environment.  So many long tracks, so many trick opportunities.  I wanted an excuse to use this place as a playground.

"Hey, Snake!"

Nick's voice caught me off guard.  I turned around.

"There's a village around here.  I want to introduce you to some of the locals.  It's down this path, you can't miss it."

This sounded like the excuse I was looking for.  "Sounds cool.  Hey, I'll race you there."

"I like you already, Snake.  Let's go!"

---

(Sonic's P.O.V.)

I still can't believe he beat me!

Snake and I had pretty much stayed neck and neck during the race to the village, each of us pulling ahead of the other every now and then, but Snake managed to snatch the lead from me at the last second and cross through the city gate first.

"Come on, Nick, no need to hold back," Snake commented.  "You let me pass you on purpose!"

Before I could reply, the familiar voice of Zonshen, the village elder, interrupted us.  Apparently he had witnessed our finish.

"Ah my, what's this?  I didn't expect you back so soon, Sonic.  Who's this with you?"

I stepped towards the elder.  "This is Snake; I met him just last night.  Snake, this is Zonshen, the elder of this village.  His grandson, Chun, should be around here somewhere as well; he's always looking for a bite to eat."

Soon the rest of the village's population showed up.  I didn't hesitate to introduce Snake to everyone, and vice-versa.  Apparently Snake didn't know a lot of people from his realm, so this was a new experience for him.

Hualin approached the two of us and handed Snake something.  "Here, take this.  Any friend of Sonic's is a friend of ours."  (I think I blushed.)

Snake took it.  "Er, thank you.  What is it?  I've never seen anything like this before."

"It's a paper lantern," Hualin explained.  "You hang it somewhere and place a light inside it, usually a candle.  The lantern protects it from the wind, and it's pretty to look at.  We sell these lanterns as souvenirs here in Chun-nan."

The foreign words marked on the lantern, she continued, translated to an ancient proverb that originated in Chun-nan: "The best friends you can have are the ones you make out of your enemies."

Before Snake could ask what that meant, a familiar noise caught my ears.  It was the Tornado's engine!  Everyone turned in its direction as the Tornado parked in the middle of the path, Tails inside it.

"Hey, Sonic!  I'm glad I found you!  Who's that with you?"

I jumped onto the Tornado's wings and motioned for Snake to follow.  "Let's head back to Spagonia, Tails.  We'll explain everything on the way!"

Once we were on board, Tails punched the starter, and the engine purred to life.  Soon we were in the air, and Snake seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.

Tails turned on his videochat monitor as we were explaining everything, so Professor Pickle could listen in too.  But one of the most important details of the incident was something we hadn't even found out yet...

Finally, chapter four. You saw all this coming, didn't you?

I finally got an S-rank on Eggmanland. Now I have to gather more Sun Medals if I want to open any more Gaia Gate doors. All I have left are a few A-ranks to be turned into S-ranks, and I'll have 102 Sun Medals (I have 93 now, and I need two more to open the next door). For some reason I just can't get enough Dark Gaia energy in Holoska's Aurora Snowfields to top off that S-rank. Is there a secret I'm missing? Sonic's fully leveled...

And they're back! omg, how does Snake like this new world. I really like how you've referred to Chun, and how he's always trying to find something remotely edible, good referencing. Who knows how long it will be before the Stone of Light decides it would be amusing to send them somewhere else; to the past, perhaps, where they can meet the dinosaurs! No, not really. Anyway, keep it! I'll be watching...
